Requirements For Hiking
Hiking is an exhilarating experience and a great way to take a break from the mundane and routine schedule of daily living and enjoy the fresh air and scenic surroundings. Hiking unlike walking in urban areas actually refers to vigorous and long walks on footpaths or trails in the countryside or mountainside.
Choosing the right hiking backpack is equally important as carrying all the essentials and being equipped for a hike. The points to consider while choosing a backpack for a hike include the length of the hike, whether it is a day hike, an overnight hike or a hike that will last for more than a week. The size and capacity of a backpack will vary depending on the duration of the trip.
Also, the personal backpacking style needs to be considered before choosing a hiking backpack, whether the user is more inclined towards light weight and comfortable travelling or the hiker needs to carry old and bulky gear or if the hiker is looking for space efficiency. The other thing that determines the type of backpack is the body type of the hiker. Most think that a hiker’s height plays a role in selecting a backpack but it is actually the torso length. Once these points are considered choosing the correct backpack for a hike becomes easy and makes the hike more fun instead of cumbersome.
Those hiking for a day do not require a lot of equipments but the essential items one must carry include some food, water, protective gear against rain and a map. The list of requirements might become elaborate if the hike is long, rigorous or night hiking. But common for all these hikes is the need for sturdy, durable and comfortable boots that help provide stability as well as protection from the rough terrain when walking on a mountain or backpacking to a spot. Other vital items to pack for a hike include a tactical flashlight, a compass, sunscreen, sunglasses, knife, fire starter and most important a first aid kit along with other necessities such as insect repellents, hat, gloves, emergency blanket and a navigation device that works on GPS. The most important thing is a backpack which is vital to pack all these items into such that the weight is not overbearing.
Hiking can be a little rigorous and may cause fatigue and muscle spasms and pain if not physically fit or if hikers are not accustomed to it. Thus it is advisable for those going on a hike to train a little before hand and build stamina. Other than being a little physically taxing compared to walking in urban areas and parks, hiking is a pleasurable activity that refreshes one’s mind and also can be counted as an adventurous workout.
